Life Begins at the end of your comfort zone

October 30, 2017
Comfort zones are easy; that's why we stay in them so long.  The "zone" always feels safe and, well, comfortable.   As you all know, I’ve been silent for some time now.  What you don’t know is that, for me, the silence has spoken volumes.  Let me take you back.

Do you remember last summer when I vacationed in Key West and South Florida?  I shared my favorite Key West resort, The Southern Most Beach Resort and Breakfast at the Breakers.  I even extended my vacation by three days before flying home to Kansas.   The beach called to me and I answered.

In the blink of an eye, I sold my house, downsized by over 50% and ended my relationship of 11 years.  I empty nested, and left alone. . . all. by. myself.  I moved into a condo on the water in Palm Beach, Florida and into the unknown.  Boy, when I do it... I do it big!  I knew what I needed;   I needed to let go of the things and thoughts that were getting in the way of me living an authentic life.  Life's dot to dots don't always connect in a straight line, that's why they call it a journey.

Know this, the people we surround ourselves with will either raise or lower our standards.  They either help us become the best version of ourselves or simply discourage us.  We all need people in our lives to remind us of our essential purpose and to challenge us to  be better. In Florida, I could count my acquaintenances on one hand but the one that mattered was a 26 year friendship; a sisterhood really.  Today, that relationship has ended as well.

Throughout my six month journey, people changed. But more importantly, I changed.  I witnessed events and behaviors that were toxic.  I gained a whole new understanding of the term "frenemy".  I stepped back.  In doing so, I was able to see what was broken.   I made no fan fair, fuss, or statement of my feelings; I quietly pulled away, even to the point of passing her in public without her awareness.  On several occasions, she mentioned that she could see I was slipping in my sharpness for details No, I just wasn't allowing her to see that I was as sharp as ever.   I purposefully did not have any clear conversations regarding my position.  After all,  it was a moot point.  I know, I know, not my style, right? I just didn't need... or want to work on mending it any longer.  I was done.  Without the poisonous relationship surrounding me, I started to grow.  Unfortunately, the growth didn't come without grief.

Oh, how I have grieved the past year.  I grieved for a friendship that would not, as always thought, last a lifetime.  I grieved for the mother role that I had lost as a result of empty nesting and the move.  I grieved for my relationship of eleven years, my love, my best friend.  I grieved for the life I had built for myself and my family in Kansas.  Every day I would put on my favorite play list and walk the beach and when that was done, I would float in the water for hours on end.  Surrounded by strangers, I cried millions of tears into that ocean.   I needed to be alone without really being alone.  That was what my soul needed.

Where am I now you ask?  Simply put, I am in a better place.  It has been a journey, and will continue to be one, but I know I am where I am supposed to be and I know I am here for the right reasons.  You see, while I was physically in Florida for those 6 months, I could never get my heart to make the same transition.  So,  I packed myself up again and moved back to the Midwest.  I close on my new house in a few days and I am already in my second month at my new job.  I stayed in healthcare, so that at least went smoothly!   I have missed you and my blog but know that stepping away was necessary.  Would I go back and do it differently?  No.  I truly believe that things happen for a reason but now I am ready to come back to you!  The emails, texts, pm messages and comments I've received are appreciated more than you will ever know.  I have always loved this little corner of my world and can't wait to take you back to Peridot Skies.  xo

Wednesday Wants

May 11, 2016
Wednesday wants are a little late today... but it's still Wednesday.  I attended an event last night and when I got home I just didn't have the energy to pull my list together!  Do you ever just get home and want to do nothing?  Yeah, that was me last night.  So this week's list has a few summer fun items and well as a staple item or two!  Loving tassels anyway I can get them, on the hem of this fun top or a pair of fun earrings.  Love them!  I love my slip silk pillowcase and swear by it.  Add a little Kiehl's midnight recovery and you are in for the best beauty sleep you can get.  I am loving the saddle tan this season and this bag is super cute.  I have been a fan of Ashley Pittman jewelry for some time and hope to add a few pieces of hers to my collection of bracelets. Honestly I would love any piece of Ashley Pittman jewelry.  Taking the best of both worlds this sandal is a comfy flat and has an ankle strap.  Soft pink lips please with this Dior lip glow, and finally this off the shoulder gingham top/tunic is adorable.  This image doesn't do it justice and it's on sale too!  Enjoy!

Wrapping up the Week

April 29, 2016

It's been a heck of a week and I am happy it's Friday!  Too much drama and petty behavior for me in one week.  I'm putting it all behind me and looking forward to a relaxing weekend.  #goodenergy

I'm happy for these gorgeous Rananculous that have graced my counter this week.  Best investment for floral arrangements ever was taking a Bloom Academy Class.  If you follow me on snap, (find me here > lisa.murie) then you saw where my peonies bush in my backyard is bursting with blooms about to open.   I can't wait for those beauties to grace my counter soon.

I am looking at dates to visit my bestie in Florida and I think this is a must for my vacation.

Spotted, or rather checked.... haha, these gingham flats, right now 30% off with code SCORE and by combining gingham and leather it makes for the perfect flat, but if lace ups more your style then these are perfect and on sale too 30% off with code SCORE!!

I may have found the perfect off the shoulder striped top here.  Being on sale doesn't hurt either!

Have a great weekend my friends, and I will see you back here next week!

Jill Brodeur Custom Bags

April 12, 2016

I first notice Jill Brodeur's designs by accident.  I honestly can't remember what I was searching for on Etsy when her designs showed up.  It was love at first sight.  Not only was I drawn by her use of vibrant colors, but I loved her technique for adding the perfect monogram!  Is there really such thing as a perfect monogram?  Wouldn't all monograms be perfect?  Ha! I am introducing you to Jill Brodeur today and know you will love her designs as much as I do.  Featured on Etsy's Blog back in December which you can read the entire post here, she was featured for her designs which were recognized for the craftsmanship and quality she brings to each bag or item she creates by hand.

Inspired by her surroundings, Jill has always been a creative person.  Experimenting with a variety of mediums she was always open to learn.  With her first taste of design school as a fine arts major and an intense course in accessories, she knew she had found her love.  Switching up her major she was well on her way to creating her own style and design. To Jill, one of her most important pieces of inspiration comes from the leather itself.  From the texture to the color of the leather, she begins there for the initial inspiration and test it out.  Each item is made by hand and she takes great pride in her work.  As Jill states: "her hands and her heart touch every part of the process."

I love my custom monogram bag Jill sent me and the vibrant fuchsia is so fun.  Lined in silk, it is the perfect size for your evening essentials for a night out or a quick day tip of errands.

Starting her line with just the monogram clutch, she soon found out her technique was perfect for other designs as well.  Adding several other designs to her line she continues to grow and add new items frequently.  Her dream of creating a more personalized accessory was coming true.
This pink and gold trinket tray is perfect for my desktop and it's available in other colors too.

Mother's Day is coming soon and if you are looking for a perfect gift that will be sure to make an impression you should check out Jill Brodeur and even pick yourself up a little something too.  I already have my eye on her gold clutch and large bright pink leather clutch.

Tips for keeping your clothes looking new

Blanket-Scarfs-Styling
Investing in quality items is something I have talked about here and here.  Your style is reflected in what you wear and how you wear it, but style is just as much a part how you take care of your clothes when you aren't wearing them.  There are many things you can do to insure your clothes last longer and stay in the best shape possible by proper care.

Here are a few of my favorite ways for taking better care of my clothes.  You have heard the saying " Wash, wear, repeat", well that's true in some cases but for some of your items you can skip a wash or two..... I know I said skip a wash!

Cold Water and Delicate Cycle  Wash your clothes in cold water and/or on a delicate cycle.  Cold water not only minimizes shrinking and wrinkles, it is easier on your clothes and better at not fading your colors.  A regular cycle agitates faster breaking down the fibers and in essence adding wear to your clothes just by cleaning them; making them look older quicker.

Hang vs. Heat  This is pretty much a no brainer.  If you can hang your clothes then do it!  Think about your hair and the damage too much heat can do to it.  The same holds true for your clothes.  Heat fades darker clothing items faster so they will loose the rich look if you opt to dry them.

Professional-Jiffy-Steamer

Steam for sure. I live for my steamer.  I own this one and love it.  It is an investment that not only pays for itself, it also helps maintain the value in your clothes.  I can't remember the last time I ironed anything.  Steaming is easier on your clothes and definitely a must for delicates.  I will say however a word to the wise: I have burned my knuckles and fingertips so may times with my steamer so be careful.

Inside Out is always best.  Turn your garments inside out to help keep colors from bleeding and always zip things up, button the buttons, and secure any Velcro pockets to protect the other garments from snags or tears during the wash.

A little bounce goes along way.  For your items that do make it to the dryer, be sure to add a fabric softener.  Not only does it  make your items smell good it helps with static and pilling.

Velvet-Hangers

Folding up.  Knits and cottons are best folded and rayon, acrylics, and linen is best on hangers.  I love these velvet hangers for all my garments that hang.

Do you have any tips to share with how you keep your clothes looking fresh?

Merry Christmas

December 26, 2015

As I look back over the past year I can't help but be joyous with where I am today.  Re branding was something I have wanted to do for a while but needed to really define what I wanted my brand to stand for.  I think we accomplished it beautifully.   It stands for everything I love and inspire to share with you.  Clean, simple, and always a splash of pink and a pop of leopard!  It's about the beauty you want to share with the world.  Embracing your flaws and imperfections because lets face it, we all have them and we only begin to truly shine when we don't let it hold us back; rather help us grow.  I appreciate every one of you for supporting me, encouraging me, and making me want to share everyday with you the best I have to give.  Blogging is a lot of work and takes a lot of time to curate and create great content.  Working full time and blogging almost full time has been challenging sometimes; but I would change a thing.  I love my little blog and hope you will continue to ride the ride with me as we head into the new year.  Merry Christmas and I can't wait for an even better 2016!

Instagram Happenings

October 12, 2015
Happy Monday!  How was your weekend?  Mine was busy and productive, but never long enough! Today I am sharing a few favorites from my instagram account of what's happening there.  Do you follow me on instagram?  There are exciting things I am working on behind the scenes in my office and my blog so stay tune for that announcement.  It is finally cool enough to wear my favorite booties.... and found the perfect amount of distress on a new pair of jeans for under $60.  Sharing my favorite lipstick color and tortoise sunnies.  There is something to wearing this pink color even in fall that just makes me happy!  OH, and it's #Pinktober and that means Breast Cancer Awareness and lots of pink!

How to make Burlap Leaves

How_To_Make_Burlap_Leaves

I decided to end the week with a quick fall DIY.  I shared these leaves in my Metallic Pumpkins giveaway post earlier this week.... If you haven't entered yet no worries there is still time; click here and enter to win a trio of pumpkins of your choice!  These leaves were super easy and can be completed in one afternoon.

Supplies

Burlap - I picked mine up at Target with the gold flecks
Mod Podge - Watered down glue would work too
Shapes of leaves
Scissors
Paint
Fine tip sharpie

I gathered leaves from the park, but you could also google leaf shapes and find a few samples.

Next I traced the shapes on my burlap as close as possible to minimize waste.  In order to keep the edges from fraying I lightly coated the edge of the shapes with mod podge.

Once dry, I cut out all my leaves.

Now for the interesting step.  I wanted to add color but didn't want to cover my gold flecks.  I mixed several colors together or reds, oranges, yellows, and browns to color the tips of the leaves.  Then I went back over the edges of the leaves with my finger and tipped them in gold for a little shimmer.  Once they were dry and I was pleased with the mottled colors I lined the leaves with veins.

Mixing Metallics for Fall and a Giveaway

September 15, 2015
Have you seen LoveFeastShop  plush velvet pumpkins?  They are gorgeous.  I have the Sunset Trio  and shared how I styled them in my home here.  This year I'm adding a new set to my decor and I couldn't be more excited.  Are you ready for this?  Metallic gold pumpkins.  Gorgeous; not to be outdone by the silver metallic either!   You will have a chance to win a set of your choice too. Ekkkk... get excited!

I struggled briefly deciding between the silver and gold, but in the end the gold went better with my Sunset trio.  I really love the lambskin set too!  I don't want to jump the gun and pull out all my fall decor but I did style my sofa table with my new set and couldn't be happier with how the two sets go together.  See how I made my velvet acorns for my décor here or if you're not too crafty, you can purchase those from here as well!

I found a roll of burlap with gold flecks in it and made about a dozen leaves to add to my decor.  The gold flecks in the burlap compliment the metallic pumpkins well.  Keep an eye out for when I share how I made these leaves a little later.

Are you ready for fall?  Have you already pulled out your decorations?  Well today I am going to help you get started.  I have teamed up with LoveFeastShop and we are  offering a Trio of your choice of pumpkins (excluding the lambskin) to compliment your home this fall season.  I know it's not pumpkin spice latte but it is a trio of adorable pumpkins!

You sold your house... So now what?

August 11, 2015

The real estate market is on its game again.  With people buying and selling new homes this time of year, or any time for that matter, helping out the new homeowner is a bonus. Have you ever bought a new home and wondered what your wall color was?  What about samples of your wallpaper, or carpet?    I know that when and if I sell my home I will be gifting the new owners with some helpful information.  Actually.... it's golden information!   I have done a lot of updating recently to my home, painting, new carpet, wallpaper and some updated pillows. When I am going shopping for something for the house I like to take my book with me to have all the color swatches available to make sure the new item will work in my home.    I shared my master house book and you can read what goes in it here.

Here is a list of helpful information you should leave for your new home owner. If the owners are new to the area they will be most grateful for this information.

Master color book.  As I mentioned above, you can read all about what goes into mine here.

Swatches.  These should be a part of your master house book, but if not, you will want to leave a sample of any fabrics that are staying with the house.

Service men you used.  This is a must.  Any service company you have used will most likely have a history of your service as well as you trust them to be reliable and honest.

Neighbors list.  This is tricky because what you really want to do is warn them about the crazy neighbors you have but that would be passing judgment and for all you know the new owners may love the crazy neighbors!   You want to leave a list of the most relevant neighbors; next door on both sides, across the street, and behind you.

Closest stores.  Create a list of the closest drug store, Target, grocery store, gas station, 24 hour pharmacy and post office.

Driving Shortcut secrets.  Know a few secrets?  Share with the new owners a few short cuts thru perhaps the neighborhood or to the school or store!

Did I miss anything?  What would you want the owners to leave on your list?

How To Shop With Groupon Coupons

July 30, 2015

It's no surprise I like to shop and shopping online is no exception.  Like most shoppers I also want to score the best deal possible.  Did you know Groupon offers coupons to some of your favorite place to shop?  Yes you read that right Groupon has coupons.  Unlike Groupon, there is no upfront purchase required to reap the benefits of saving.  Offering over 55,000 coupons  and promo codes totally free for the shopper, Groupon Coupons partners with more than 8,000 retailers to pass this savings on to you; top stores like Nordstrom, Express, Macy'sJC PennyNike and the list goes on. Taking a trip?  Search the site for deals with one of their partners Expedia, Hotwire or Travelocity.  I just returned from my trip to California and used Expedia for my hotel deal.   Rather shop in person?  you can also print some coupons off and take with you.  Many of these coupons are exclusive to Groupon Coupons.
When you first open the webpage you will see their top coupons and offers. Who knows you may find deal you weren't looking for.  If a specific store is how you would rather shop, type the name in the search bar and it will bring up all the stores current offers.  I almost always search for an extra discount or coupon when shopping online.

I am a huge Nordstrom shopper, and Express.  If you remember this past fall I raved about my favorite pair of jeans, dress slacks and Portofino tops which are all from Express.  Adding a Groupon Coupon discount only makes my purchase that much nicer.   While I no longer have back to school shopping to do for my kids.... I do want to take advantage of the sales as well as the end of season sales.  Adding an additional discount to already sale items is a no brainer!!

Here are some tips for finding your savings:

Go to Groupon Coupons

You may search by store or category

If you don't find a discount for your item, look for a free shipping offers.  Sometimes that in itself is a 10% savings!

Shop around for your specific item and compare savings with other stores offering the same item.

Watch for when the offer expires so you don't miss the deal

Ready to start saving?  Check them out and let me know what you think!

This is a sponsored post but all expressions and opinions are my own not to mention the numerous post of me wearing my Express jeans.

White Chairs

June 25, 2015
I shared my master bedroom recently and though I should share a few of the other updates I have been doing around the house. We added these white chairs and this rug to open up the room a bit more.  Not that a 16 ft ceiling isn't open but the white brightened up the room.  In case you missed my bedroom reveal you can see it here, and my office here.  I thought I would share a few of the other updating that has been taking place in other areas of my home.  This past weekend I hung new wallpaper in the master bath, now I'm searching for the right area rug and a few pieces of art to finish that room makeover as well.  I'm a busy girl these days around the house it seems!
