Weekend recap

May 06, 2013
What. A. Weekend!!!  It came in with a roar, and settled down by Sunday, but boy did it do a number on me!

Friday evening started out with a bang.  We were home most of the evening,  and about a quarter to 9 I had to leave to pick my youngest up from work.  The BF wanted to ride with me since it was dark, cold and raining.  The temperature was around 38, and the rain was a heavy mist.  You will need those details in a little bit as the story unfolds.

We drove to pick him up, and returned home to our neighborhood. Total time gone=30 minutes.  I turned the corner on the adjacent street towards my street to a sea of lights.  I realized it was my street all lite up.

The top picture is what I saw as I turned the street, and the bottom photo is looking back down the street from my house.  My heart was panicked as all I could think of was that could be my house.  The police had the street blocked and I could not turn down and as he instructed me to park on the side street, I looked down past him and saw a two story house, on my side of the street, and smoke billowing out of it.  I freaked!

My son jumped out, and cut between houses to make sure it wasn't ours.  It was the house one over from mine.  Whew!  I have never been so grateful, and sad at the same time.   The street was lined with neighbors, and bustling with firefighters.  Remember when I said it was cold and rainy?  That made it seem even worse to be out in the cold rain, and we had to walk/run down the street to get home.

The rest of the weekend had it's events, but I will only share the good highlights, like dinner with the BF at one of our fave restaurants, enjoying cocktails for Cinco De Mayo with a blood orange Cosmo. I was even lucky enough to score the recipe to this drink, so I will be making these plenty this summer!  Good news for this Mimi, the grand kids have officially left Texas, and officially Kansas bound!  I am excited to have them 2 hours away finally.  They can start having weekends with my like another little fella who turns 8 months old today!  Wow!  Where does the time go? His basket of toys at my house is growing, and a gate for the stairs has officially gone up!

Oh, and the fabric I shared last weekend for the den/office? I started sewing on the pillows and am too excited to finally show the entire room!  It has been a long process it seems to finally feel like it is pulled together.

How was your weekend?

My Terrarium

May 02, 2013
There is a story behind this whole project.  Lets begin with the broken jars shall we? I hunted for several days for the "right jars".  I had a specific look in mind and I was having trouble getting around it!  I finally happened upon "the right jars" and was happy!    I finished gathering the supplies for this little project and headed home. The rest, as they say, is history, or at least written about here!

So on to this little DIY!  It really was quite simple and perfect to do with younger kids.

Supplies needed:
  • Potting mix
  • Activated carbon, (Charcoal)
  • Drainage pebbles
  • A glass container with lid
  • Small slower growing plants
The first layer you want to build in your terrarium is the pebble base for drainage.  Adding approximately a 1 to 3 ratio of charcoal to your pebbles will prevent your terrarium from smelling stagnant if there is any water standing in the bottom for any period of time.  You want this layer to be approximately 1 to 1.5 inches deep, depending on how large your glass jar is.
Next add a layer of your good potting soil. This layer needs to be 4 inches or so.  You will have to judge the amount based on your container size, but you want a good base for the roots to spread out.
See the little black specks in the pebbles?  That is my activated carbon, or charcoal.
Next, you want to carefully pot your plants in the soil.  I added a nice fern that I pruned back slightly to easily accomodate my jar.  As it grows, I will prune it back to keep in full, but small. I also have an african violet in my jar.  Just be sure if you place a violet in your jar, you keep the dead flowers pinched off. Once everything was planted, I watered it nicely and closed it up!  You could even add a few larger stones for decorations, or a few fun items like a glass mushroom, a fairly, or gnome!  A little boy could even add a few toy soldiers to his!
I originally purchased  a bunch of succulents to plant in my jars, but they are really better for a open top container, as they do not require as much moisture, so I planted them in other pots and added more pebbles and love them!
I would love to hear if any of you have made a terrarium, and what you planted in your jars!

Four Favorites // Summer soon

May 01, 2013

Jack Rogers    Polish     Shorts    Case

Summer felt like it arrived this week, but we all know its a big joke!  Yesteray it was 81 and I have a beautiful bit of color on my shoulders and back from being out in it, but tomorrow is calling for 40 and rain/snow! Snow?  What a mess!  I have dugout box seats to the Royals game tomorrow and this is not how I expected to attend the game.   Oy!

Super tired today from the Fleetwood Mac concert last night, they came back on stage three times, and I didn't get to bed until after 1am!  But it was soo good!

This weeks favorites are all about the anticiation for summer to arrive! Did you know you can customize your Jack's now?  How cool is that!  I obviously made mine pink and silver!  My favorite Essie polish right now is Mint Candy apple, and I might not change it for a while!  The checkered phone case reminds me of summer picnics, and these color block shorts are super cute!

Come on summertime! well, at least some summertime temperatures!

Linking up today, check out the girls four favorites too!
